Fire Safety Procedures

Cutting or welding must be permitted only in areas that are or have been made fire safe. When work cannot be moved practically, as in most construction work, the area must be made safe by removing combustibles or protecting combustibles from ignition sources.

For the protection of the operators of nearby equipment, fire-resistant curtains or suitable shields must be set up around the machine and in such a manner that the operator's movements are not hampered.

No welding, cutting, or heating may be performed where the application of flammable paints, other flammable compounds, or heavy dust concentrations creates a hazard.

Before cutting or welding is permitted, the area must be inspected by the individual responsible for authorizing cutting and welding operations, which is typically referred to as the PAI.
