Types of Hot Work

Welding - This is a process whereby materials (usually metals or thermoplastics) are joined together, or fused, with a process utilizing either heat, pressure, or a combination of both. There are several subsets of welding; the most commonly used types are arc, gas, resistance, energy beam, and solid-state welding.

Soldering - This is a process in which two or more metals are fused by melting and flowing a filler metal at the joint. The filler metal has a lower melting point than the adjoining pieces, so, unlike welding, the separate pieces joined are not melted.

Brazing - This process is similar to soldering with its use of a filler metal. However, this process typically involves higher temperatures and produces strong fusions.

Cutting - This process involves cutting a metal object through the use of flames, plasma, or lasers. As with welding, high levels of heat are generated throughout this process.

Grinding - This process is considered to be a subset of cutting. It utilizes a grinding wheel to cut or smooth metallic surfaces.

Drilling - This is a cutting process that utilizes a drill bit to cut or enlarge a hole in a solid object. This process can sometimes generate high levels of heat and sparks that are potentially harmful.
