After the Medical Examination
Employees have a right to privacy of their medical information. Therefore, the employer must instruct the physician that findings (including lab results or diagnoses unrelated to the worker's lead exposure) must not be revealed to the employer (or included in the written opinion to the employer).
Once the employer receives information from the physician (or physicians) regarding the medical examination, they must:
- Pass on a copy of the following information to the employee
- Notify the employee if there is a chance that lead exposure may lead to health problems
- Explain to the employee any special protective measures or limitations on the worker's exposure to lead
- Note any employee limitations on respirator use
- Provide the results of the blood lead determinations
It is also helpful if the written statement includes a statement that the physician has informed the employee of the results of the consultation or medical examination and has explained any medical condition that might call for further examinations or treatments.
