Engineering Controls
If a workplace contains lead or lead-based materials, the simplest and most effective way to eliminate lead exposure is to remove these materials (or change the processes that involve lead).
These changes are examples of engineering controls. Engineering controls are actions taken to change the worksite and make it safer.
Examples of engineering controls specific to lead exposure include the following:
- Exhaust ventilation
- Lead enclosure or encapsulation
- Substitution of lead for safer materials when possible
- Replacing lead-based components
- Changing processes or modifying equipment to avoid use of lead
- Isolating lead-related activities when possible
