Information for the Examining Physician

The employer must ensure that the examining physician has all information necessary to make the most informed medical decisions. This includes the following:

  • A copy of OSHA's Lead Standard (including all appendices)
  • A description of the affected employee's duties in relation to the employee's exposure
  • The employee's lead exposure level or anticipated exposure level
  • A description of personal protective equipment to be used (or currently in use)
  • Previous blood lead testing levels
  • All previous written medical opinions for the employee

The employer must also do the following:

  • Instruct the physician to advise employees of any medical condition (related to the occupation or not) that requires further evaluation or treatment.
  • Inform the physician of the information needed from the physician, which will be passed on to the employee.

Please note that some states require laboratories and health care providers to report cases of high blood lead concentrations to their state health departments. Check with your local OSHA office to see if this is the case.
