Introduction

Lead is a metal that is in a solid form at room temperature. It is a basic chemical element (its symbol is Pb) that can combine with other elements or substances to create lead-based compounds.

According to the World Health Organization, "There is no level of exposure to lead that is known to be without harmful effects." Even short-term exposure to lead (over several days) can cause a condition called encephalopathy, which affects the brain and can induce seizures, coma, and even heart attacks that lead to death. Long-term exposure (also called chronic exposure) to this cumulative toxin can create severe damage to the central nervous system and to the reproductive system. Lead can also be toxic to children and hurt their development. It is exceptionally dangerous to pregnant women and their unborn children.

In this course, the construction industry is prone to both short-term (acute) and long-term (chronic) exposure. The results of both are severe and non-reversible.
