Substitution

Another way to reduce lead exposure may seem somewhat obvious: stop using lead! This option (substitution) is the third engineering control.

Of course, this is easier said than done, since so many products are still lead-based. However, there are some alternatives. Here are some alternative products and processes to consider for construction activities:

  • Rather than lead-containing coatings, use zinc-containing primers covered by an epoxy intermediate coat and polyurethane topcoat.
  • Instead of abrasive blasting, if possible, use surface preparation equipment like needle guns with multiple reciprocating needles completely enclosed within an adjustable shroud. (The shroud catches dust and debris at the cutting edge, and works with a HEPA vacuum filtration.)
  • Rather than hand-scraping with a heat gun, consider using chemical strippers on building exteriors, surfaces involving carvings or molding, or iron work. (Chemical removal creates less airborne lead dust. However, these stripping materials can also be hazardous, so employers and employees should review all safety data sheets for these stripping agents.)
