When to Conduct a Medical Exam

Employers must have employees undergo an immediate medical examination under any of the following circumstances:

  • An employee's airborne exposure is at or above the AL for more than 30 days for 12 months consecutively.
  • The employee develops signs or symptoms commonly associated with lead-related diseases.
  • The employee demonstrates difficulty breathing during a respirator use fit test.
  • The employee needs medical advice concerning the effects of past or current lead exposure related to the employee's ability to have a healthy child.
  • The employee is under medical removal and has a medically appropriate need for an examination. (You will learn more about medical removal in this section.)
