Worker Protection Programs

In this course, you will learn about the requirements employers have to make worksites with lead as safe as possible for employees. You will learn that employers must analyze a site and determine its hazards, conduct medical surveillance of employees, remove employees who have lead overexposure, and create programs related to work safety, hygiene, site maintenance, and protective equipment. You also will learn that employers must keep detailed records of these programs, reports, and plans.

When put together, this all creates what OSHA calls a Worker Protection Program. A Worker Protection Program includes all of the above-mentioned components. It is a part of the Lead Standard in Construction, and a requirement for the worksite.

As a review, an OSHA Worker Protection Program for Lead includes the following for employees exposed to lead above the PEL:

  • Hazard determination, including exposure assessment
  • Medical surveillance and provisions for medical removal
  • Job-specific compliance programs
  • Engineering and work practice controls
  • Respiratory protection
  • Protective clothing and equipment
  • Housekeeping
  • Hygiene facilities and practices
  • Signs
  • Employee information and training
  • Recordkeeping
