Equipment

Your employer must provide and maintain safety equipment and teach you how to use it at no cost to you. After that, it is up to you to use it according to your training. The following is a list of equipment that is required:

  • Testing and monitoring equipment for hazardous atmospheres
  • Ventilation equipment
  • Communication equipment, including electronics like radios or walkie-talkies
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE), such as ventilators and hard hats
  • Lighting equipment that is approved for use around whatever ignitable or flammable vapors you might be working near, and that is bright enough for working and exiting safely
  • Barriers and shields to keep people and objects from falling, and to divert traffic or unauthorized entrants
  • Equipment, like ladders or hoists, for entering and exiting the space safely
  • Rescue and emergency equipment, unless that equipment is provided by a rescue service
