High Risk Jobs

Many professions require work in confined spaces. Mining, oil, and gas industries have the highest percentage of fatalities related to confined spaces, followed by agriculture. These jobs have their own regulations for confined spaces, but this course will focus on confined spaces in the construction industry, which has third highest confined space fatality rate.

The following is a selection of the possible confined spaces you may be involved with when working a construction job: bins; boilers; elevators; escalators; pits; manholes (such as sewers or storm drains); tanks (such as fuel, chemical, water, or other tanks); incinerators; concrete columns; transformer vaults; heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) ducts; water mains; shafts; enclosed beams; silos; turbines; and many more.

You are at a greater risk if your construction job involves hot work such as welding, soldering, or burning.
