Alternative Stabilization

When open web steel joists cannot be field-bolted at the column, they must be stabilized by some alternate means that adheres to the following guidelines:

• The stabilizing element must be installed on both sides near the column.
• The alternative stabilization must provide stability equivalent to the method for field-bolting at the column.
• The alternative stabilization must be designed by a qualified person.
• The alternative stabilization must be included in the erection drawings.
• The alternative stabilization must be shop-installed, not field-installed.
• Hoisting cables cannot be released until both seats of the joist are field-bolted and the joist is adequately stabilized.
