Attachment of Steel Joists

Steel joists and steel joist girders must be attached to the support structure according to the specifications required for their series. Note the following details:

  • "K" series joists must be connected in one of three ways: with at least two 1/8-inch wide, 1-inch long fillet welds; with two 1/2-inch bolts; or by means of an attachment method that provides equivalent strength and support.
  • "LH" and "DH" series joists must be connected in one of three ways: with at least two 1/4-inch wide, 2-inch long fillet welds; or with two 3/4-inch bolts; or by means of an equivalent attachment method.

Both sides of the seat of at least one of the joist's ends must be attached to the support structure as soon as the joist is placed in its final position and before any more joists are laid. Panels that were preassembled using joists and bridging must be attached to the support structure at each panel corner before the hoisting cables are released.
