Erection of Steel Joists
If a joist is long enough to require bridging, it must be connected to the support structure at both sides of the seat of one of the joist's ends before the hoisting cables may be released. If a joist is longer than 60 feet, both ends of the joist must be connected to the support structure, and bridging must be installed before the hoisting cables may be released.
Only one employee at a time may sit or stand on any joist that does not require bridging until all of the bridging is installed and anchored. Employees are not allowed on joists that do require bridging, except to install the bridging. If the end points on existing permanent bridging cannot be used, additional temporary end points must be created to provide stability.
