High-Risk Activities
Many different work activities are involved in steel erection. The following work activities present particularly high risks:
- Hoisting, laying out, and placing steel members
- Connecting, welding, guying, bracing, and bolting steel members
- Plumbing and rigging structural steel, steel joists, and metal buildings
- Installing metal decking, curtain walls, window walls, siding systems, miscellaneous metals, ornamental iron, and similar materials
- Moving from point to point while performing the foregoing activities
Many other activities are included in the safety requirements when those activities take place during or in the vicinity of steel erection. There is still a risk of falls or of being hit by falling objects, among the other hazards that occur during steel erection. Therefore, anyone in the area where steel erection is taking place must adhere to the safety requirements.
