Joists & Other Elements

Both ends of any steel joist or cold-formed joist must be fully bolted or welded to the support structure before the hoisting equipment may be released. No employees or construction loads may be placed on any joists before they are fully bolted or welded to the support structure.

For girt and eave strut-to-frame connections that share connection holes, at least one bolt must remain attached with its nut wrench-tight so that the girt is always secure. A manufacturer-supplied, field-attached seat or other connection device may be used instead of keeping one bolt attached, as long as the latter method prevents the girt from becoming displaced.

Purlins and girts may not be used as anchorage points for fall arrest systems, unless a qualified person gives written approval.

Construction loads may only be placed within 8 feet of the center of the primary structural support.
