Ladder Safety
Even ladders can be dangerous if used improperly. Here are a few tips for safely using ladders in the workplace:
- Do not use ladders that have loose rungs, cracked side rails, missing foot pads, or other visible damage.
- Keep rungs free of slippery substances.
- To avoid electrocution, do not use metal ladders within 50 feet of power lines.
- Do not place ladders in tight spaces or passageways without somehow diverting pedestrian traffic away.
- No more than one person at a time should use the ladder.
- Always face the ladder when climbing up or down.
- Always have at least three points of contact with the ladder: either two feet and one hand, or one foot and two hands.
- Do not lean backwards or sideways away from the ladder.
- Do not stand on the top two rungs of any ladder.
- The top of a ladder should extend at least 3 feet above the edge of what it leans against.
- Ladders should be secured in place or held by a coworker.
- Ladders should not stand on unstable surfaces.
- Do not hold objects in your hands while climbing the ladder.
- Do not attempt to move the ladder while on it.
