Open Web Joists

In general, steel joists at or near a column that span 60 feet or less must be strong enough so that they can be released from the hoisting cable without the need for erection bridging.

Joists that span more than 60 feet must be set alongside each other with all bridging installed. An alternative method to bridging may be used if it is designed by a qualified person, provides the same stability, and is included in the site-specific erection safety plan.

Steel joists or girders must not be placed on any structural element that is not stabilized. When joists are landed on a structure, they must be immediately secured to prevent unintentional movement.

The project's structural engineer must approve any modifications that could affect the strength of a joist, such as cutting or bending the joist. Joists and girders must not be used as anchorage points for a fall arrest system, unless their use is approved by a qualified person.
