Positioning Device Systems

Positioning device systems are body belts or harnesses that allow the user to safely work on a vertical surface, such as a wall or column, while working with both hands. These systems must be rigged so that the user may not free fall more than 2 feet. The positioning device system should be capable of withstanding twice the potential impact load of an employee's fall (that is, the amount of force a person's body exerts on the system when coming to a stop). Like personal fall arrest systems, positioning device systems are to be used by personnel only, and not to hoist materials.

Positioning device connectors (including dee-rings and snaphooks) must adhere to the same standards as those for personal fall arrest systems. Positioning device systems must be inspected prior to each use, and any defective components must be removed.
