Training

Before work begins, employers must provide training to all workers involved in a steel erection project at no cost to the worker. The employers must ensure employee participation. At a minimum, this training must include fall hazard training and coverage of the OSHA safety standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart R), but workers may need additional training depending on their particular job, as follows:

  • If a worker is involved in multiple-lift rigging procedures, he or she must understand the hazards associated with multiple lifts and the proper procedures and equipment to be used.
  • Workers who engage in connecting activities must know the hazards involved, and understand the techniques for establishment, access, and proper connecting.
  • Where Controlled Decking Zones (CDZ) are in use, workers must be trained in the hazards associated with CDZ as well as establishment of the zone, access to the zone, proper installation techniques, and proper work practices.
