Implementing Controls

If testing determines that the exposure levels at the workplace are too high, it is time to get to work reducing those exposure levels. The first step is to implement the best possible permanent solution for reducing or eliminating the hazard of silica in the workplace. If such a solution cannot be put into action immediately, then the employer is required to put a temporary control in place to protect the workers until the permanent solution is completed.

The following solutions are listed in order of preference (although, depending on your specific situation, a higher choice may actually be less effective):

1. Use a silica substitute.
2. Use engineering controls.
3. Improve work practices.
4. Use personal protective equipment (PPE).

Note that all of these options could serve as a permanent solution, if necessary. Yet, the ones toward the bottom serve well as temporary controls, and the ones toward the top serve best as permanent controls.
