Injury Statistics

It is estimated that about 2.3 million workers are currently exposed to respirable crystalline silica in their workplaces. These include about 2 million construction workers who drill, cut, crush, or grind silica-containing materials, such as concrete and stone.

For years, responsible employers have been protecting workers from harmful exposure to respirable crystalline silica by using widely available equipment. This equipment usually controls dust by means of water or a vacuum system.

OSHA estimates that, once its effects are fully realized, the new standards will save over 600 lives and prevent more than 900 new cases of silicosis each year. Additionally, OSHA expects compliance to cost employers up to $1 billion dollars a year. However, OSHA believes the costs will be spread evenly over each employer, meaning each employer should expect to spend upwards of $1,500 per year on compliance, with compliance costs being higher initially). OSHA predicts compliance costs for small businesses will be slightly less per year-around $560.
