Medical Examinations
The only sure way to determine if you have silicosis is through a medical examination. As of September 27, 2017, employers must provide medical screening to construction workers who wear a respirator for entry into a regulated area with a PEL equal to or greater than 50 μg/m3 for 30 or more days per year.
Keep in mind that medical surveillance is not a substitute for good dust control in the workplace. Controlling exposure is the only effective primary prevention strategy.
All workers breathing crystalline silica dust should have a medical examination that includes the following:
- A medical exam focusing on the respiratory system
- A work and medical history
- Chest X-ray
Baseline testing must occur within 30 days after initial assignment, unless the employee has had an examination which meets these requirements within the last three years. Periodic testing is required every three years.
