Use Proper Ventilation
Proper ventilation is always important when working in a dusty environment. In enclosed processes or operations, a slight vacuum should be used. This vacuum will create negative pressure so that external air will flow into the enclosure and minimize contamination of the workplace. This can be accomplished with a local exhaust ventilation (LEV) system that physically encloses the process as much as possible to keep silica from entering the work atmosphere. Ventilation equipment should be checked at least every 3 months to ensure that adequate performance is maintained. Employers should reevaluate the effectiveness of all ventilation systems whenever there is any change in production, processes, or controls that might result in significant increases in exposure to silica or, especially, silica flour.
