Using Hand-Operated Grinders
Construction workers who grind concrete may breathe dust that contains dangerous silica. A NIOSH study found that workers grinding concrete were exposed to high levels of dust containing silica, ranging from 35 to 55 times the NIOSH recommended exposure limit.
Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems can be attached to concrete grinders to reduce silica exposure. Exposure levels are significantly lower when workers use grinders equipped with a LEV system than the grinders used without a LEV system.
An LEV system consists of a grinder equipped with a ventilation shroud, a length of flexible hose, and some sort of portable electric vacuum cleaner that acts as a fan and dust collector for the ventilation system.
