Nail Penetration
Injury can occur when a nail passes through a work piece and either hits a worker's hand or flies off as a projectile. One common type of nail penetration is a blow-out, which occurs when a nail is placed near a knot in the wood. Because knots involve a change in wood grain, they create weak spots or hard spots that can cause a nail to change direction and exit the work piece.
Nail penetration is a particular concern for placement work where a piece of lumber must be held in place by hand because if the nail misses or breaks through the work piece, it can cause injuries to that hand.
