Powder Actuated Nail Guns

Powder actuated nail guns are similar to firearms in that they rely on a controlled explosion to fire nails. Certification is required to operate this type of nail gun. Rounds fire at different speeds and are color-coded according to their speed. These rounds and their speeds are as follows:

Green: 490 fps
Yellow: 575 fps
Red: 675 fps

Note that there are a number of regulations governing the use of this type of nail gun. These regulations can be found in 29 CFR 1926.302(e).
