Devices Used in the TTC Zone
A number of different methods are used in TTC zones to communicate with roadway users passing through the zone. We have just taken a look at one method, flaggers. In this section, we will summarize the MUTCD standards and guidelines for other, non-human, traffic control devices. These include the following:
- Signs
- Portable and changeable message signs
- Arrow displays
- Channelizing devices
- Pavement markings
- Other devices used in the TTC zone
Under both FHWA and MUTCD rules, all devices used for roadway work sites must meet performance criteria for crashworthiness. State or local transportation authorities may also specify criteria for devices.
In general, if a traffic control device is going to be used for construction, maintenance, utility, or incident management operations on any road open to the public, it must comply with the MUTCD wherever applicable.
