The Activity Area: Lateral Buffer Space

The lateral buffer space is the area between the work space and moving traffic, as measured across the roadway. The lateral buffer space provides protection for both workers and passing traffic.

Lateral buffer spaces may be used when it is important to keep traffic away from a hazard such as a low shoulder, a trench, or an excavation. It can also be used to separate two opposing lanes of traffic passing through the work area.

There is no set distance or specification for this area. It must be determined based on engineering judgment.
