Other Devices Used in the TTC Zone
The MUTCD provides guidelines and standards for a number of additional devices that are commonly used in roadway construction TTC zones. These can be summarized as follows:
Lighting Devices
Lighting can be used at the discretion of TTC zone safety engineers. The lighting used must never interfere with the vision of road users, flaggers, or workers. Flagger stations must always be illuminated at night.
Temporary Traffic Barriers
Temporary traffic barriers are portable barriers used to prevent road user traffic from entering work areas. They can also separate workers, bicyclists, pedestrians, and others from vehicle traffic or divide opposing directions of traffic.
Crash Cushions
A crash cushion is a system that reduces the effects of a vehicle striking an object. Crash cushions are positioned at the exposed ends of concrete barriers, or may be mounted on the rear of a shadow vehicle. Shadow vehicles often follow slow-moving mobile operations to provide a transition zone.
Rumble Strips
A rumble strip is a rough-textured section of road surface. The noise and vibration that occur when motorist drives over the strip alerts the motorist to unusual road conditions ahead.
Screens
Screens can be used to block the view of distracting construction zone activities from passing drivers. Screens can work to discourage gawking and the traffic slowing and accidents that arise from it. It is important to mount screens in such a way that they allow needed visibility and sight distance for all road users.
