Principle 6: Provide Appropriate Training

If an individual's actions may affect safety in the TTC zone, he or she must receive appropriate training. The MUTCD states that everyone "from upper-level management through field workers" should be trained on subjects that will help the individuals make safe decisions in their work role.

As we noted earlier, a person who is given the responsibility of selecting, placing, and maintaining the devices used for TTC needs to have training in proper TTC principles and practices.

Worker safety training for the roadway work zone should include the following subjects:

  • Identify job-site hazards and explain the needed safeguards that protect against these hazards.
  • Provide information on the proper use of traffic control devices and other protection, and about any hazards that are still present even when these devices are used.
  • Ensure that both external and internal traffic control plans are fully explained to workers.
  • Brief all employees on the emergency action plan for the work site.
  • Define and practice safe evasive actions that individuals can take if an accident is about to occur.

Because each work site is different, there will likely be other subjects that must be trained as well. To make sure that training is effective, worker safety training should be offered in the language best understood by the worker.
