Signs

The MUTCD defines more than 130 different signs for use in TTC zones. The full list, with sign designations, applicable MUTCD section references, and sign minimum sizes, is provided in 2009 MUTCD Section 6F.02, Table 6F.1.

The signs in a TTC zone communicate key information to drivers through words, symbols, and arrows. There are three primary categories of TTC signage, as follows:

  • Regulatory signs advise road users of upcoming changes in the TTC zone.
  • Warning signs alert road users to upcoming dangers.
  • Guide signs provide instructions.

In a sense, roadway signage is form of "talking" to passing motorists. The MUTCD rules ensure that the language that is used - words, colors, sign shape, and other factors - is always consistent, regardless of where it is being used. This way, drivers and other road users will always understand what is being said.

In most cases, signs must be placed on the right-hand side of the road. Where extra emphasis is needed, however, signage may be placed on both sides of the road. The mounting height of signs must be consistent with MUTCD guidelines, but the sign need not always be mounted on a rigid pole. Signs may be mounted on barricades, on vehicles, or on portable stands.

Signs must be maintained for the duration of the work project. The signs must be clean, visible, and correctly positioned. If a sign has lost its readability for any reason, the road crew must replace the sign promptly.
