The Transition Area

The advance warning area is followed by a transition area. In this section of the roadway, drivers are directed from the normal path of travel. It is important to clearly communicate the new path of travel. Drivers should never be expected to either figure out or make their own decisions about what the new path should be.

A transition area often involves the use of tapers, which are used to gradually close off a lane. Tapers will be discussed later in this course.

If the construction operation is mobile and moving down the roadway, vehicle-mounted warning devices can be used to direct traffic in the transition area. A line-striping truck is an example of a mobile operation.
