Using the Typical Applications
Every roadway construction work zone is different. As result, planners usually need to adjust the typical application for a given work zone to match their situations. Consider the following factors when developing a TTC plan for your work zone.
Work Duration
Roadway construction projects can be long-term and stationary, or, at the other end of the spectrum, short-term or mobile. The duration of the project determines the TTC is required, including such things as the number and types of TTC devices.
Long-term projects typically require the installation of the full range of TTC devices and procedures. These projects may also involve nighttime work, which requires illuminated or reflective TTC devices. In addition, long-term projects often require the removal of roadway markings that are not appropriate to the work zone or traffic flow and their replacement with temporary markings.
Work Location
The MUTCD categorizes typical applications by the type of road on which the work is located. If the work is on a roadway that is currently used by traffic, advance warning devices are required to advise drivers of the work ahead.
Project Complexity
When a roadway construction project is complex for any reason, planners need to modify the typical applications to reflect that complexity. The MUTCD states that planners should consider employing additional or upgraded devices, improving the road geometrics at detours and crossovers, increasing the distances of warning areas and tapers, and adding lighting.
