Bricklayers' Square Scaffolds

A bricklayers' square scaffold is a supported scaffold composed of framed wood squares which support a platform limited to light and medium duty work.

Bricklayers' square scaffolds must adhere to the following criteria:

  • Scaffolds made of wood must be reinforced with gussets on both sides of each corner.
  • Diagonal braces must be installed on all sides of each square.
  • Diagonal braces must be installed between squares on the rear and front sides of the scaffold, and must extend from the bottom of each square to the top of the next square.
  • Bricklayers' square scaffolds must not exceed three tiers in height and must be constructed and arranged so one square rests directly above the other. The upper tiers must stand on a continuous row of planks laid across the next lower tier, and must be nailed down or otherwise secured to prevent displacement.
