Non-mandatory Guidance for Fulfilling OSHA Scaffolding Standards

29 CFR 1926, Subpart L, "Scaffolds," has four Non-mandatory appendices to help employers comply with the standards in Subpart L. The appendices are summarized here:

  • Appendix A provides non-mandatory guidelines for designing scaffold systems, including many charts and measurements for scaffold components; however, because the guidelines do not provide all the information necessary to build a complete system, the employer is still responsible for designing and assembling scaffolds that meet all the requirements of Subpart L. Some aspects of Appendix A were covered already in this course. More information about Appendix A is found on the following slides.
  • Appendix B is a placeholder for future OSHA content.
  • Appendix C lists national consensus standards related to aerial, vehicle mounted, manually propelled, self-propelled, mast climbing, and other such devices.
  • Appendix D serves as a guide to assist employers when evaluating the training needs for employees erecting or dismantling supported scaffolds. This material was covered in this course.
  • Appendix E provides drawings of particular types of scaffolds and scaffold components as well as graphic illustrations of bracing patterns and tie-spacing patterns.
