Platform Coatings & Finishes
Hairline cracks can significantly reduce the strength of a wood plank or platform, so early detection of structural defects is important. Opaque finishes can cover such cracks and make them difficult to discover. Therefore, wood platforms must not be covered with opaque finishes. They may be coated periodically with preservatives, fire-retardant finishes, and slip-resistant finishes, but the coating may not obscure the top or bottom wood surfaces. Platform edges, however, may be marked as necessary.
