Regulations

You can access OSHA's scaffold regulations by consulting the United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), which publishes the rules and regulations of the U.S. government. An electronic version of the CFR is available online.

The CFR has 50 sections, called titles; each title represents a broad area subject to federal regulation. The titles are subdivided into parts, which are identified by the § symbol. Title 29 pertains to labor. Part (§) 1926 pertains to construction.

Scaffold safety regulations are contained in 29 CFR §1926, Subpart L, "Scaffolds," which consists of §1926.450 through §1926.453 and appendices. It applies to the types of supported and suspended scaffolds named in this course. It does not apply to crane- or derrick-suspended personnel platforms. Furthermore, it applies to personnel whose work requires them to use a scaffold as well as to those whose specialty is the assembly and disassembly of scaffolds. Most of this course focuses on Subpart L.

This course also refers to 29 CFR §1926, Subpart M, "Fall Protection," which consists of §1926.500 through §1926.503 and appendices.

It is not within the scope of this course to cover every detail of 29 CFR §1926 that relates to scaffolds. Please refer to the CFR for the complete text and related resources.
