Handrails

A handrail provides a secure handhold for the user to grasp while climbing up or down stairs. It is recommended to always use a handrail, as it can prevent falls, slips, and trips. All stairways with four or more risers or that rise more than 30 inches in height, whichever is less, must have at least one handrail. If there is only one handrail, it is usually located on the right side as you descend the stairway. The handrail must be continuous and must provide an adequate grip. In other words, you should be able to run your hand smoothly up or down the handrail without having to adjust your grip. In addition, the handrail must be strong enough to support at least 200 pounds. The position of the handrail must be placed between 30 inches and 37 inches from the surface of the tread.

People generally hold the handrail with their hand on top of the rail. However, when walking down very steep stairs, using stairs in low lighting, carrying a load in one hand, or using stairs with slippery surfaces, you can decrease your risk by turning your body 30 degrees toward the rail and gripping the rail underneath, with your palm up and your arm slightly trailing your body. This position gives you a stronger grip, and if you do slip, you will fall toward the railing.
