Horizontal Lifelines
A lifeline is a line attached to a secure anchor point and is used by workers in conjunction with a travel restraint system, typically attached to the lifeline by a rope grab. Horizontal lifelines are run from one end of a platform to another and are attached at two separate anchor points.
Horizontal lifelines must meet the following requirements:
- Extend to a safe surface below the work area
- Be securely attached at two separate anchor points
- Be clean, free of knots, lubricants, and imperfections
- Be free of splices, except where they connect to an anchor point
- Have softeners covering all sharp edges to protect against cuts or chafing
- Be identified as a lifeline with color or some other means
- Not used for any other purpose
- Be used by one worker at a time
