Portable Ladders
Portable ladders provide an easy means of accessing heights and can be readily moved or carried. There are two basic types of portable ladders: self-supporting ladders and non-self-supporting ladders.
Self-supporting ladders fold out and have one or two extra legs attached to the ladder for support. These ladders do not require a structure to support them. The primary type of self-supporting ladder is a stepladder.
Non-self-supporting ladders must be leaned against a solid structure for support. They cannot stand alone. The support structure must be strong enough to support the weight of the ladder, the worker, and any tools or materials being used by the worker on the ladder. Non-self-supporting ladders include straight ladders and extension ladders.
