Risk Identification

When examining a site, be sure to inspect the entire area for possible risks. Take into account any unguarded edges and openings. Inspect all ladders, scaffolding, and mobile platforms to ensure stability and proper functionality. If roofing or other work is being performed from an elevated level, the stability and fragility of the partially constructed structure, as well as its slope and the materials used, should be considered in risk identification.

Other aspects to consider when inspecting the workplace include the following:

• Slippery surfaces that are wet, glazed, or polished
• The capability to support loads
• The slope of surfaces
• Uneven surfaces
• The stability of permanent or temporary structures
• The level of the ground for scaffolding or work platforms
• Entry and exit points
• Places where hand grips may loosen
