Scaffold Safety Best Practices

Fall protection is required on any scaffold that is more than 10 feet above a lower level. Fall protection can include guardrails or fall arrest systems.

Fall arrest systems are required on suspended scaffolds and on any scaffold where a guardrail cannot be properly installed. Personal fall-arrest systems include harnesses, components of the harness, such as D-rings, and snap hooks, lifelines, and anchorage points.

The following types of scaffolds require fall arrest systems:

  • Boatswain's chair
  • Catenary
  • Float
  • Needle beam
  • Ladder
  • Pump jack

Fall arrest systems and guardrails are both required on single- and two-point adjustable suspension scaffolds.
