Stairway Safety Practices & Guidelines
The following safety practices and guidelines should be used when working on or around stairways:
- Always use railings and handrails.
- Take your time. Never rush or run up or down stairs.
- Pay close attention. Look for the leading edge of each step, and make sure you can see your feet touching each step. Watch for other people on the stairway. Avoid distractions from cell phones or talking to others.
- Reduce fatigue on long climbs by minimizing your load and taking rest breaks.
- Never use stairways for storage.
- Keep stairs clean of clutter and spills.
- Ensure that there is sufficient lighting.
- Take one step at a time. Do not try to jump or skip steps.
- Work from safe platforms, not from the steps.
- Wear appropriate footwear. Shoes with high heels, slippery soles, and open toes can increase risk. Shoes should be well fitting with good traction.
