Requirements for Sloping & Benching

Soil classification requirements: Classification of soil and rock deposits must be in accordance with the guidelines previously set forth.

Maximum allowable slope requirements: The maximum allowable slope for a soil or rock deposit must be determined from Table B-1 of Appendix B.

Actual slope requirements:

  • The actual slope must not be steeper than the maximum allowable slope.
  • The actual slope must be less steep than the maximum allowable slope, when there are signs of distress. If that situation occurs, the slope must be cut back to an actual slope that is at least one-half horizontal to one vertical (one-half H to 1V) less steep than the maximum allowable slope.
  • When surcharge loads from stored material or equipment, operating equipment, or traffic are present, a competent person must determine the degree to which the actual slope must be reduced below the maximum allowable slope and must ensure that such reduction is achieved.
    • Surcharge loads from adjacent structures must be evaluated in accordance with §1926.651(i): Where the stability of adjoining buildings, walls, or other structures is endangered by excavation operations, support systems such as shoring, bracing, or underpinning shall be provided to ensure the stability of such structures for the protection of employees.
