Engineering Controls & PPE

An exposure control plan describes the universal precautions that will be taken to meet the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard for employees. All employees should receive an explanation of the control plan during their initial training session.

The plan must be reviewed annually during refresher training.

All employees should be able to review the exposure control plan at any point during their work day.

Engineering Controls

Engineering controls and work practice controls should be used to prevent or minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Personal Protective Equipment

Employers must provide PPE to employees at no cost. Employers must provide training in the use of the appropriate PPE for specific tasks or procedures. An exposure control plan should outline the types of PPE available to employees. The plan should also outline the location of the PPE.
