History & Background: Needlestick Safety & Prevention Act

In November 2000, President Clinton signed the Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act, which would amend the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard. The Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act achieved the following:

  • It changed the focus of legislation from behavior to safety devices. We will discuss these engineering controls later in the course.
  • Along with the Medicare Modernization Act, it expanded the coverage of the newly amended Bloodborne Pathogens Standard from just the private sector to both public and private sectors.
  • It allowed employees to have better access to training, records, and emerging technology.
