Post-Exposure Evaluations & Follow-Up

In the case of an exposure, post-exposure evaluations and follow-up should be available to all employees at no cost and at a reasonable place as part of an exposure control plan.

Post-Exposure Evaluations and Follow-Up

After the exposure incident is reported, the employer must allow each employee to have access to a confidential medical evaluation and follow-up, which includes at least:

  • Documentation of the route of exposure and circumstances under which it occurred
  • Identification and documentation of the "source individual"
  • Testing of the employee for HBV, HCV, and HIV statuses as soon as possible after consent is obtained
  • Post-exposure measures to prevent the spread of the disease, when medically indicated, as recommended by the CDC and the U.S. Public Health Service
  • Counseling
  • Evaluation of reported illnesses
