Waste Removal

When a tattoo or body piercing studio uses universal precautions in the handling of all specimens, the labeling and color-coding of specimens is not necessary if containers are recognizable as containing specimens. This exemption only applies when these containers remain within the facility. Labeling or color-coding is required when these containers leave the facility.

Disposal of all regulated waste must be in accordance with applicable state regulations. These rules are typically published by state environmental agencies or state departments of health.

In addition to state rules for disposing of regulated waste, there are basic OSHA requirements that protect workers. The OSHA rules state that regulated waste must be placed in containers that are:

  • Closable.
  • Constructed to contain all contents and prevent leakage of fluids during handling, storage, transport, or shipping.
  • Labeled or color-coded in accordance with the standard.
  • Closed prior to removal to prevent spillage or protrusion of contents during handling, storage, transport, or shipping.
  • If outside contamination of the regulated waste container occurs, it must be placed in a second container meeting the above standards.
