Available PPE

PPE for encounters with bloodborne pathogens may include the following:

  • Gloves
  • Gowns
  • Laboratory coats
  • Face shields or masks
  • Eye protection
  • Pocket masks

Whenever splashes or droplets of blood or OPIM pose a hazard to the eyes, nose, or mouth, one should wear the following PPE:

  • Face shields
  • Masks
  • Protective eyewear

The following PPE provides bodily protection:

  • Laboratory coats
  • Gowns
  • Gloves
  • Aprons

Whenever the potential for exposure to large amounts of infectious material or OPIM is probable, such as during an autopsy, workers should wear the following PPE:

  • Surgical caps
  • Hoods
  • Shoe covers or boots

Workers should wear the following PPE when working in HIV and HBV research laboratories and production facilities:

  • Laboratory coats
  • Gowns
  • Smocks
  • Uniforms
  • Other appropriate protective clothing

Workers must not wear protective clothing outside of the work area. Clothing worn in the work area must be decontaminated before being laundered.
